Weightlifting and bodybuilding

Bodybuilding is a discipline based around training that aims to develop pronounced musculature. Bodybuilders use weights and do constant training with heavy loads to obtain a defined physique with low body fat. This discipline is mainly based around aesthetics rather than sporting prowess. Competitors take part in exhibitions in which they are assessed on the basis of various specific parameters including muscle mass, symmetry and proportions.

The first bodybuilding competition took place in London in 1901, with the prize winner receiving a statuette of Eugen Sandow, a Prussian known as the father of the discipline. Nowadays, the most prestigious competition is Mister Olympia, in which professional athletes go head-to-head, showing off the proportions and symmetry of their muscles.
