Soccer, also called five-a-side football, was born in the 1930s in Uruguay. Its invention was due to Professor Juan Carlos Ceriani, who having the need to let his students play ball in small gyms of schools, decided to create a new game combining some features of other sports such as handball, water polo and basketball.
In 1933 the precise rules were defined and this discipline began to spread more and more in South America, especially in Brazil. Soccer is also called football five or futsal.
